Environmental Education - HTML

Environmental education refers to educational activities aimed at acquiring knowledge about environmental conservation, deepening interest and understanding of environmental issues, and fostering environmentally conscious behavior and decision-making abilities. It has developed based on the three pillars proposed by British educator Arthur Lucas in 1972: 'education about the environment,' 'education in the environment,' and 'education for the environment.' In 2003, Japan enacted the 'Act on the Promotion of Environmental Conservation Activities through Environmental Education,' and in 2024, the basic policy was revised to address climate change crises by supporting and promoting both individual awareness and behavioral changes and organizational and socio-economic system transformations. It is implemented in various settings including schools, communities, and businesses, and is closely related to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
