Materials and Manufacturing Industries encompass material industries within the manufacturing sector of the Japan Standard Industrial Classification, including chemical industries, paper and pulp industries, ceramics and stone products manufacturing, iron and steel industries, and non-ferrous metal manufacturing. These industries account for approximately 20% of the entire manufacturing sector and serve as the foundation of Japan's manufacturing competitiveness as suppliers of raw materials to downstream industries such as automotive, electrical and electronics, and construction. Known as energy-intensive industries, they are also considered important from an economic security perspective.
