Tax offices are local administrative offices established under Regional Taxation Bureaus (and Okinawa Regional Taxation Office) of the National Tax Agency, with 524 offices nationwide. They serve as the frontline for national tax assessment and collection, acting as the most accessible point of contact for taxpayers. Their responsibilities include processing tax returns, providing tax consultations, conducting tax audits, managing delinquent tax collection, and handling procedures related to income tax, corporate tax, consumption tax, inheritance tax, and other national taxes. Each tax office has a designated jurisdiction based on residential addresses, and taxpayers generally use the tax office covering their place of residence.
