Overview
UN Member States
UN member states consist of 193 sovereign states that have ratified the United Nations Charter and been admitted as full members of the United Nations. Starting with 51 founding members in 1945, the number has grown to the current 193 through decolonization and the emergence of new states. The most recent member is South Sudan, which joined on July 14, 2011. Each member state has equal voting rights in the UN General Assembly and cooperates to achieve the purposes of the United Nations, including maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, and promoting sustainable development.
