Overview

Active Volcanoes in Japan

Active volcanoes in Japan are defined as those that have erupted within approximately the last 10,000 years or currently exhibit active fumarolic activity. The Japan Meteorological Agency has designated 111 active volcanoes, of which 50 are under constant 24-hour observation using seismometers, GNSS, tiltmeters, air vibration sensors, and surveillance cameras. These volcanoes are distributed throughout the Japanese archipelago from Hokkaido to the Southwest Islands and Northern Territories, and volcanic alert levels (1-5) are set to support disaster prevention measures.
