GRID (Global Research Identifier Database) was an open database of unique research-related organization identifiers developed by Digital Science in 2015. Released under CC0 license, it contained over 100,000 records of research organizations worldwide. Public releases were discontinued in 2021, and leadership transitioned to ROR (Research Organization Registry). ROR classifies research organizations into 9 types: Education, Funder, Healthcare, Company, Archive, Nonprofit, Government, Facility, and Other.

company company Company A private for-profit corporate entity involved in conducting or sponsoring research.
archive archive Archive An organization involved in stewarding research and cultural heritage materials.
nonprofit nonprofit Nonprofit A non-profit and non-governmental organization involved in conducting or funding research.
government government Government An organization that is part of or operated by a national or regional government and that conducts or supports research.
facility facility Facility A specialized facility where research takes place, such as a laboratory or telescope or dedicated research area.
other other Other A category for any organization that does not fit the categories above.
