Historical era classifications are an important framework for understanding history systematically. World history commonly uses a five-period division (Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, Modern, and Contemporary), while Japanese history employs a six-period division (Prehistoric, Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, Modern, and Contemporary).
