Overview

ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an international code used to identify serial publications and continuing resources such as journals, newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, databases, and blogs. Defined by ISO 3297 and JIS X 0306, it consists of 8 digits: 7 Arabic numerals plus 1 check digit (or X). The ISSN has a one-to-one correspondence with a publication, and a new ISSN is assigned when the title changes. In Japan, the ISSN National Centre within the National Diet Library assigns ISSNs free of charge based on applications from publishers.
