Types of Libraries - INI
Libraries in Japan are classified into six types based on their operators and primary users: National Library (National Diet Library), public libraries, university libraries, school libraries, special libraries, and other libraries. Each is established under different legal frameworks and provides specialized services to specific user groups. The National Diet Library comprehensively collects domestic publications through the deposit system, public libraries support the cultural enrichment of local residents, university libraries support academic research, and special libraries provide in-depth knowledge in specific fields, collectively forming the foundation of Japan's intellectual infrastructure.
