The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a standard unique identifier for healthcare providers managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. It is issued to both individual healthcare providers (Type 1) and healthcare organizations (Type 2), and is used in all standard healthcare transactions including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance.
