Overview

Types of Greenhouse Gases

Greenhouse gases are the collective term for gases that contribute to rising global temperatures. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases (HFCs, PFCs, SF6, etc.) are known as the main types. Each gas is evaluated for its warming impact by the Global Warming Potential (GWP), and they differ in atmospheric lifetime and emission sources. In the International Framework for Climate Change, the IPCC has positioned the reduction of these gas emissions as an important issue.

CO2 carbon-dioxide Carbon Dioxide The most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for approximately 75% of anthropogenic emissions. 数百〜数千年 約75% CO₂ 1 ["Fossil fuel combustion","Cement production","Deforestation"]
CH4 methane Methane Has approximately 28 times the warming potential of CO₂, accounting for about 18% of anthropogenic emissions. 約12年 約18% CH₄ 27.9 ["Agriculture (rice, livestock)","Natural gas extraction","Waste landfills"]
N2O nitrous-oxide Nitrous Oxide Also called laughing gas, with approximately 273 times the warming potential of CO₂. 約109年 約4% N₂O 273 ["Nitrogen fertilizer use","Industrial processes","Fuel combustion"]
HFC hydrofluorocarbons Hydrofluorocarbons Fluorinated gases used in refrigerants with hundreds to thousands of times the warming potential. 数年〜数十年 約1% HFCs 675 ["Refrigerants for refrigerators and AC","Spray cans","Foaming agents"]
